About the hospital

Large Animal Teaching Hospital comprises the equine hospital, the mobile veterinary service, and our clinical teaching facilities.

The hospital is part of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences.

Until 2008, the hospital was located on Frederiksberg Campus of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL). Today, we operate from modern and easily accessible facilities in Taastrup.

Here, we provide specialised diagnostic evaluation and treatment, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and expertise from leading Danish and international specialists. The hospital receives approximately 1,700 referred patients each year, including around 500 emergency cases presenting with acute illness or injury.

Our team of veterinarians, veterinary nurses/animal care staff, and senior veterinary students provides round-the-clock care, including intensive treatment for critically ill patients such as horses with colic and neonatal foals.

Facilities

Diagnostics and Surgery

  • Six large examination rooms
  • Two operating theatres with specially padded recovery stalls
  • Diagnostic imaging facilities, including:
    • Fixed radiography systems
    • Mobile radiography units
    • Ultrasound scanners
  • CT unit with specially equipped stalls
  • Scintigraphy unit with dedicated radiation-safe stabling

Hospitalisation and Intensive Care

  • 16 stalls for critically ill patients (ICU – Intensive Care Unit)
  • 25 standard stalls
  • Isolation unit for horses with infectious diseases

KUSTOS Arena and Exercise Facilities

  • Indoor arena for lameness evaluations and dynamic endoscopy, with spectator seating
  • Two examination stalls and a dedicated trot-up area
  • Round pens and paddocks available for hospitalised patients

As part of the University of Copenhagen, we differ from other equine hospitals in Denmark.

We combine clinical care, education and research, ensuring a high professional standard and access to the latest advances in medicine, surgery and reproduction.
The hospital attracts leading experts and collaborates with Danish and international institutions as well as local veterinary practices, contributing to a dynamic environment of clinical excellence, innovation and knowledge sharing.

Education and training of the next generation of veterinarians is also provided in areas of medicine, surgery and reproduction in large animals.
